The Department of Chemical Engineering at Semnan University began its activities in 2000 with the admission of undergraduate students in Chemical Engineering - Mineral Chemical Industries. In 2002, a master’s program in Chemical Engineering with a focus on Separation Processes was approved, followed by the establishment of a Process Design program at the master’s level in 2004. In 2007, due to the growth in academic and technical capabilities and an increase in faculty members, the undergraduate program in Chemical Engineering - Petroleum Process Design was introduced. In 2008, new programs in Chemical Engineering - Gas Industries (undergraduate), Chemical Engineering - Thermokinetics (master’s), and Chemical Engineering - Thermodynamics (Ph.D.) were also approved. Additionally, in 2009, a Ph.D. program in Chemical Engineering with a specialization in Transport Phenomena was inaugurated.

With the support of the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology, and based on the activities of its faculty members, the Department of Chemical Engineering was upgraded to the Faculty of Chemical, Petroleum, and Gas Engineering by the Board of Trustees in 2008. In December 2009, the new faculty building was inaugurated. Currently, the faculty operates with 15 full-time faculty members, 7 well-equipped research laboratories, a research group focused on gypsum, and advanced educational facilities. It has also made significant contributions to research and development at the university level. In 2018, according to the Shanghai Ranking System, the faculty was recognized among the top 500 faculties worldwide in Chemical Engineering.
